The Power Of Brown...Eyeshadow

I did a blog a long time ago called "What Can Brown Do For You" and it has been one of my most wildly popular blogs to date.  So I figure, you all dig brown eyeshadow as much as I do.  Check out the link above for specifics on how to pick the right shade of brown shadow for you.

Brown is one of the easiest shadow and lip colors for most of us to pull off, you just have to find the right shade for your skin tone.  I am sporting various shades of brown on my eyes and lips here!

Brown gets a bad rap for being boring and ugly, but that is soooo not true.   Now I do have vivid memories of some bad brown lipstick from when Miss Jenny from the Block (Jennifer Lopez) was a Fly Girl on In Living Color.  Check her out on the very bottom in the middle sporting some not-so-flattering brown lips (although I'm sure back in the early 90's, we all thought it was a beautiful shade-but now we know better!) along with her fellow Fly Girls.

I tend to go through brown phases where that's all I wear because it's easy to pull off with whatever I have on that day because it is such a great neutral!!  I just purchased a new brown from MAC called "handwritten" ($14) that has renewed my love of brown shadow. This one is a deep matte brown with a hint of eggplant purple, and is really pretty for ladies with medium to dark skin shades.   I have it on from lash to crease in the pics below- however my camera somehow turned it to looking slightly reddish. Probably bc I have on a copper brown eye liner.

My stab at a brown-ish lipgloss. This one by Becca in color "Afterglow" ($23)

My complete brown face- although my cheeks are more pink/terracotta- can't go too crazy;-)
Cheek color by Paula Dorf, color "passion" ($21).

Here are my latest BROWN SHADOW FAVORITES (listed in order shown on my arm from left to right):

1.  Lancome "Mannequin"($17) - good for fair skinned ladies, hint of taupe.
2.  Stila "Golightly"($18) - good for everyone, has a hint of bronzey-copper.
3.  MAC "Soba" ($14.50) - good for fair to medium skin tones, hint of light gold.
4.  MAC "Handwritten"- best for medium to dark skin, deep brown w/hint of eggplant.

Of course there are a ba-zillion other brown shades that I love, but I don't want to bore you with them all.  But never underestimate the power of brown and what it can do for your face!!

Also- never underestimate the power a wall decal can make to transform the look of a room!  This has nothing to do with makeup, but I have most recently become a big fan of the crafty website Etsy.  Ever since the flooding of my house, we have been fixing up rooms affected by the flood.  So I decided to spice up my half bathroom with a red dandelion decal I purchased off Etsy.

Me in action placing the dandelions on the wall- it actually took two people to do this though- thanks mom for your help!!

My son showing you actual height of each dandelion! He says the short one is him and the taller one is for his big brother!

My finished product with turquoise accents added to the red dandelion decal and red rug.

Since wall paper is so difficult to put up by yourself and was too $$ for me to hire someone else to do it, is why I decided a decal would be the perfect way to add some whimsy to my bathroom.  This bathroom is now my 2nd fave room in my house (first is my daughter's nursery!) and makes me so happy every time I enter it.  Isn't that how all rooms in a house should feel??!!

There you have it- my two fave things these days, the color brown and wall decals!!  I'm pretty easy to please huh??!

Face Lifts Aren't Just For Faces

Face lifts are typically thought of as a positive, uplifting, thing.  Whether they are actually ON your aging face, or if it's a play on words as a "face lift" elsewhere.

So if you've been reading my blog for the past 3 weeks, you've heard me mention about the annoying toilet flood that happened in my own home.  It destroyed about 1/4 of the downstairs of my house and left me and my hubby and 3 kiddos in limbo in our own home for about 3 weeks.  Buuut, on the bright side, my house got it's own little face lift!!

Here are my before and afters:

My floor-less kitchen eating area after the flood

My kitchen with brand new wood floors and zebra rug (I've always wanted zebra somewhere in my home!).  I got this off my fave discount site, Overstock.com, for like $75 bucks and only 3 bucks shipping on everything!

My cutie Walker showing you the ugly yellow floor-less dining room!

My new and improved dining room with peacock blue walls!! So much better!!

So not only are houses getting face lifts in my household, but I just gave my eyes a little face lift with just an eyeshadow technique.  I call it, the "upside down eyeliner" trick.  I literally got a couple compliments on this look within an hour of sporting it out.  People couldn't tell what exactly it was I had done, but they liked my eye makeup!!

To get this instant eye lift look, all you have to do is to focus on using a deep shade of shadow only on the lower lash line, and swooping it upwards at then ends.  "Abracadabra, give me lifted non-droopy eyes!!" Poof!!

I used a deep plum/bronze eyeshadow pan from Stila (Barefood Contessa- $18) and took it from the inner tear duct on the lower lash line and made a fairly thick swooping line of color that was pulled upwards towards my temple.  This is an ever so subtle trick that is somehow easier to pull off a winged look on the lower lash line than it is the upper line.

So what is your easiest trick for a face lift without the surgery??

My Fantasy Fashion And Beauty Wants For Spring

Now that the warmer weather seems to be kicking into full force, I have the spring bug!!  And with a new season comes new things I want to update my home/wardrobe/closet/makeup with.  A girl can't live on fall/winter 2010 items with this new warmer weather can she??! Of course not!!

Here are a few things I'm lusting after for this Spring.  Granted, most of these items are out of my reach (okay, budget) but I'm a girl who likes to dream big!!  Better to dream big than to not dream at all right?!

My Fantasy Bathroom.  First of all it's got all the colors of my JennySue Makeup business logo-shown above- in it (black/white/hot pink).  And since I spend a whole lotta time in my bathroom doing what I do best- applying makeup, I think a lavish bathroom with lots of windows and natural light would be perfect!!

My Fantasy Shoes.  These from Lanvin are the perfect combination of high platforms (makes your legs look longer and leaner- what more could you ask for?) and shiny bright pink (again, one of my signature colors!) and patent leather.  These would be the perfect accessory to any dull outfit- especially with the $850 price tag.  And the cork sole screams spring material.

My Fantasy Handbag.  Marc Jacobs knows how to do bags, and this one in a vibrant red snake skin ($285) couldn't be more perfect...can you tell I'm loving lots of color??!!  I like the two strap option- shorter or being able to be thrown on like a messenger bag.  I do have 3 kids, so hands free would be nice.

My Fantasy Cocktail Ring.  This multi-colored pink opal cocktail ring is by Irene Neuwirth and I found it on the Barney's website for a cool 7 grand.  Yep, this is what you call a fantasy!!  But this thing would go with everything in my closet- and even if it didn't, I'd wear it anyway;-)

My Fantasy Spring Makeup look.  Okay, so this one doesn't have to be a fantasy, bc makeup is cheaper than the rest of these things and is the easiest to copy.  Minka Kelly has been looking so beautiful these days so I just had to try and recreate this warm chic makeup look she is sporting.  Her skin is ridiculous- in a good way- and is a fantasy most women would dream of having!!

So this is me doing my best Minka impression and many views of how I created her look with products used listed at bottom.

Here are the products that got me this look:
Too Faced Natural Eye Collection- Heaven (all over), Honey Pot (crease), and Nude Beach (lashline to crease and in tear duct area) used.
Cover Girl Liquiline Blast eyeliner in brown
L'Oreal Voluminous mascara in black
L'Oreal True Match foundation in N3
Estee Lauder blush in Tender Petal
Too Faced Snow Bunny Bronzer
Lancome Juicy Tubes in Simmer
Palladio lip stain in rose

So what are your fantasy spring wants??

Coral Lips Scream Spring!

I keep seeing the big trend in beauty and fashion is the color ORANGE...I don't do orange very well, whether it be lipstick or clothing.  But, I do love a good seasonal trend and I know there's always a way to tweak a trend to make it work for you.  So instead of orange lipstick, I will wear CORAL.  Coral is just an easier version of the citrus fruit color with a hint of pink- which is always flattering on women in my opinion.

Insert picture of beautiful Charlize Theron sporting coral lips a couple months ago- she was already looking forward to spring obviously;-)

{My take on coral lips, with Maybelline's Super Stay 24Hr color in Continuous Coral}

I recently sported some coral lips to a baby shower, and paired this lip color with a yellow eye shadow (try MAC's chrome yellow $14.00) and very coral cheeks (Lancome blush in shimmer coral sunset $29.50).   I found this to be a very refreshing combination and love how spring-like this orange-y color looks, without actually being orange!

 {After I sported this look, I came across photos from Gwen Stefani's spring/summer 2011 L.A.M.B. collection where she had her models sporting the yellow eye shadow look too!  Funny, doesn't this model slightly resemble miss Stefani herself with that hair do and red lips??!}

I borrowed this coral color by Maybelline Super Stay 24hr lip color from my mom who was in town and was raving over this stay put lipcolor, so I had to give it a try.   And I must say, I put this stuff on at 10am in the morning before the shower, had some punch, petite fours, chicken salad, then Girl Scout cookies when I got home (yum, it's that time of year!) and even around 3pm, my lips still looked good as new!!  Really!

Instead of sporting "orange wear" for spring, I think I'm going to be more inspired by the white and cream palette seen at the Ralph Lauren Spring 2011 collection.  I love the idea of wearing head to toe versions of white this spring (once I get a slight tan of course!) and breaking them up with a brown belt or other leather and metal accessories.

I think my new coral lips and cheeks would also pair nicely with this crisp white look!

What fashion or beauty trends will scream spring for you this year??

JennySue Makeup Review :: L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes

I am a sucker for mascaras.  I think there is nothing more feminine than a chick with nice long luscious lashes.  So when I saw L'Oreals Voluminous Million Lashes ad with gorgeous Eva Longoria, I just had to try it!!

I mean, who wouldn't want lashes like this...even though we all know those are falsies, but it's still intriguing.  I love the original Voluminous mascara, so I figured this would be the ultimate version.  The ad claims it makes your lashes 3x thicker, which means no length promised, just wider fatter lashes.

Here is a view of the wand.  I agree it made my lashes thicker, but it didn't separate as much as I had hoped.  It clumped a bit more than I had hoped- guess that was their idea of thicker.  Overall, I gave this mascara a 3.5 out of 5.  It was just mediocre, nothing too special.  It definitely gave me noticeable lashes, but after two coats it was too dry to even try and add a third.  And it clumped more than I liked.

So here are some photos of my experience with the Million Lashes mascara:

My Walker showing off the shiny gold tube!!

Bare lashes.

First coat of mascara.  Not bad.

Second coat of mascara.  Slightly clumpy- is this the thickness promised??

My little helper wanted to be a part of the picture process while he saw me doing my lash pictures, so here we are!!  He's so lucky he doesn't need any makeup or mascara to be handsome!

I loved all of the emerald green colors from the Golden Globe Awards that I thought I would channel the green colors for my eyeshadow.  Catherine Zeta Jones was my definite favorite of that night.  I cannot wait for the Oscars to see what fab fashions and colors glide down the red carpet- February 27th!!

The Today Show On NBC Plays Tricks On You

I get very little time in the morning to watch anything on TV that I like because of my two boys - they basically ask to watch own the TV the moment their little feet hit the floor.  So I try to get up a little earlier before them so I can enjoy a jolt of my coffee and catch up on current events with my fave morning show, the Today Show on NBC.

But first...random morning style addition...

I wish I could look as cool as Nicole Richie always does when she's drinking her coffee - and there are lots of pics of her consuming this addictive stuff!!  Here is an old photo of her, but it doesn't matter,  she is so effortlessly cool!!  Maybe I should start drinking Starbucks instead of my cheap Folgers in order to get style like that ;-)  Ha ha!!

So anyway, back to my Today Show epiphany.  First of all, I love love Matt Lauer (super sexy smart guy!), Al Roker (funny weather guy!), and Meredith Vieira- they all make a great morning trio.  But I've always been amazed and slightly perplexed, as to how smooth and flawless Meredith's skin appears everyday.  I mean, she IS 57 years old and her skin looks like she's only 40 on TV at 7am in the morning!! What kind of makeup is this chick wearing?!  I swear I've seen photos of her where her wrinkles are quite obvious, um, see photo below.

Well, I've figured out that it's not necessarily the makeup that is making her look so incredibly wrinkle free.  Imagine my dismay, horror, and maybe even relief, while I was sipping my warm cup of coffee and noticed Meredith's face suddenly turn wrinkle free! This must have been a slip up by the camera man because it wasn't exactly seamless from wrinkles... to baby-smooth skin!

Warning! **(This is a homemade video I made of my actual TV screen so you'll have to watch really closely.)**

You'll probably have to watch this again, and maybe even once more after that, to see the wrinkles m.a.g.i.c.a.l.l.y disappear on her face!!  Watch the profile of her face at the beginning of this, and then as she turns her head ever so slightly,  all of sudden the wrinkles on her forehead and around her mouth just faaaadde away.  Make sure to click on the 4 small arrows in the corner to blow up the video big enough to see what I'm talking about. Watch this....

I honestly rewound this thing like 20 times to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me or that I hadn't consumed too much caffeine- and they weren't.  I tried to look online to find out what and how they can make this magic happen.  I didn't find much except for something called "skin enhancing" which is a digital setup that helps soften and reduce lines on faces but requires a lot of time and effort to get it right.

So when I say this is a slight relief for me, I mean, it's because I thought I was missing out on some secret fantastic foundation on the market that magically covers and fills in wrinkles!! Truth is, seeing is believing, and I now believe that not everyone on TV is as perfect as the networks would leave you to believe.  There is definitely some "trick" camera work going on, and I would bet it's not just NBC working this angle!!

I'm on to you NBC, and now so are all of my readers :-)  I wonder if Hoda and Kathy Lee get any love from this trick??! Ha!!

Happy Love Bug Day

I hope everyone is enjoying their Valentine's Day!!  What a gorgeous day it is here in Athens, around 66 degrees and sunny!! You couldn't ask for a more beautiful day to celebrate love on. On the down side, one of my little "love bugs," my 3 year old, has a confirmed case of the flu bug- boo hoo.  He missed out on his school Valentine party, but we spread out all our other Valentine loot on the table for him to get excited over!  Notice, a majority of the Russell Stover chocolates are completely gone- chocolates make V-Day worth while.

I found a quote from comedian David Frost who said "LOVE is staying awake all night with a sick child.  Or a very healthy adult."  Ha!!!

So true since my hubby and I have been up with our little guy 2-3 times during the night since he got sick.  I'm hoping this nice weather will cheer him up.

Well last night, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Grammy's.  It was a nice way to unwind after taking care of sick kiddos and I thought it was one of the more entertaining Grammy's I've seen.  And of course I loved seeing Rihanna, who always blows me away with hair and makeup.

Rihanna on the Grammy red carpet last night.

Close up I took of my TV of Rihanna's eye makeup!

So I took some inspiration from her Valentine-like pink and purple colored eyes with dark outstanding lips!

So this is my Love Bug look breakdown of products:

Eyes:  Kat Von D True Love eyeshadow palette. I used "missy"(shiny white) on my brow bone and from lash line to crease.  I also used "babe" (bright purple) on outside of crease and in inner tear duct area.  I also used a deep mauve-pink from my Tarte Jewelry Box (no name, sorry!) on the inside of my crease towards my nose.  Black eyeliner used on upper lash line and along inner lower rim.  Lots of Bad Bad Black by MAC Opulash mascara ($14). False individual lashes would have ramped this look up, but I have no time for that with sick kids on my hands;-)

Skin & Cheeks:  Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse in color "creamy natural."  Blush by Mark cosmetics, mosaic blush in color "chica."($8)

Lips:  Tom Ford lip color in color "black orchid" (a super deep dark wine) with Lancome's Juicy Tubes gloss in color "beach plum" ($18) on top for extra added shine!!

Make sure you reach out and love on someone, something, a pet, whatever you can get your hands on today!!  Or at least remind someone how much you care about them.  Here's me sending you all a big "germ free" JennySue Makeup hug!!
