My Sort-Of Beauty Resolution

Today is the last day of 2012, and looking back, I really have no complaints about what the whole year has brought me and my family.  The ups (and even the downs!), have made it a truly fantastic year to remember.

{The Famous NYC Times Square ball drop, 1978 (my birth year!). Via}

I seriously feel like every year gets better and better.  Who knew that by approaching my mid 30's, I would think that??  I can say with all honesty, I love where I am today, more than I did being a 21 year old.

Of course I get sentimental that my children are another year closer to 16 (what happened to celebrating those 1st birthdays??), I get annoyed with how quickly my gray hairs pop up now after just coloring them, and I can't believe another year has passed without buying window treatments for my 7 year old home, but those are all insignificant things.

On the flip side, I am soaking up how cool and fun my kids are as they become tiny adults, but with a care free attitude unlike an adult!  I am thankful for the wonderful strides made in at home hair color, and that I actually can cover up those grays with something!  And maybe my windows have just been waiting for the right "accessory" to dress them up and I will continue enjoying seeing clearly outside until then.

{Studio 54, New Years Eve, 1978.}
This was obviously the place to party and a great year! Ha!

As for resolutions, I don't make them.  I can't give you a concrete reason why, but maybe it's because I don't want to disappoint myself if I don't follow through with them.  One thing that I can say for certain though, and label it a beauty resolution if you will...

I will continue to experiment with makeup
and never feel guilty about trying to better myself through the art of makeup.
FACT:  I'm getting older, I need a little more help.
And if that help comes in the latest and greatest tube or compact, so be it.
And in the meantime, I will share my findings and thoughts with all of you!

This will be easy to follow through with because of all of you that continue to come back to visit and support my blog.  Without my readers, there would be NO JennySue Makeup.  I'm heading into my 5th year of this and I can't believe it!! One bonus of getting older and celebrating another year, is that I learn more and more every day and feel wiser for it.  From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you for supporting me this past year.  Cheers to making 2013 even more fabulous, especially our faces!!

*If you need some makeup inspiration for tonight, check out these great pics from Harparsbazaar.com, or my "Painting Faces" Pinterest board. I'm going major glitter for sure!*

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!  SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
Much love, Jennifer

My Skin Care Routine

I have finally found a skincare routine with 4 wonderful products, one for every feature on my face, that I am happy and content with...

{My holy grail of skincare.}

From left to right :

 LIPS - Victoria's Secret Pro Smooth FX Lip Scrub ($16)
FACEL'Oreal Revitalift Triple Power Deep Acting Moisturizer ($20)
CLEANSING - Clarisonic Mia 2 Cleansing System ($149)
EYES - Estee Lauder Advanced Night Eye Repair ($52)

If you haven't experienced the miracle of better skin cleansing through a Clarisonic, then you need to.  I've only been using this for a few days (another lovely Christmas gift!), and can ALREADY see a difference.  My pores are less noticeable and my skin is crazy smooth - and there is no need for an actual grainy scrub!!  I'm in love, and look forward to using this tiny system EVERY day.  And as weird as this might sound, it's actually kind of fun to use!

After cleansing, I use the Revitalift every day and night.  Its power ingredient of Hyaluronic Acid (wrinkle fighter and plumper) is what made me originally buy it.  I swear this cream has made my dry skin feel tighter and firmer yet completely moisturized.   I use the iconic Estee Lauder Eye Repair every night to keep away the eye wrinkles which haven't cropped up yet, so I'm hoping they'll stay away!   And lastly, I keep my lips from being cracked and dry this winter with the VS Pro Smooth lip scrub.  This stuff feels so good, I could use it twice a day, morning and night.

And speaking of wonder-ful, I'm hoping these 4 products will help to keep my skin looking as youthful as my tiny Wonder Woman's...

{Viv's Gammy made these old school WW pj's for her for Christmas.  Wish I had a pair.}

What wonderful products does your skin care routine consist of?  Hope everyone has a wonder-filled weekend!!

Santa Was Listening :: Fresh Sugar Soiree Mini Lip Collection

So Santa (aka, my In-Laws) was listening to what JennySue was longing for this Christmas.  I got the much talked about Sugar Soiree Mini Lip Collection!  And it does not disappoint these dry, pale  colored winter lips of mine!

 {Aren't they be-au-tiful??}

Here are 5 of the 6 the colors shown as swatches on my arm.  I didn't include the clear one for obvious reasons.  I don't usually like showing products on another part of the body other than the feature they're meant for, but I didn't have enough time to slap all 6 on and off of my lips.  (Blame having all 3 kids at home for their winter break!  Time was of the essence.)

 {Without flash.}

Shades from top of my wrist down:

Honey
Rose
Coral
Passion
Berry

 {With flash.}

{I have 2 shades layered - Coral + Berry.  They're crazy shiny!!}

*Please excuse the flash burn and bad hair day of this photo - like I said, the kids are home for the holidays, and I have to cut corners somewhere!!  Not much time is allowed to get the perfect photo before I hear someone fighting/crying over a new Christmas gift!*

But back to the product!  The color payoff for these balms is excellent.  And the actual conditioning properties are just as amazing.  They are so comfy and hydrating, that I want to keep reapplying these babies constantly throughout the day!  I'm going to be sad when these tiny things have been all used up.  They are such an effortless and easy lip color to apply and wear.   I heard this is a limited edition collection, so MAYBE I should go buy another one before they're all gone???

Have you been one of the lucky gals to get this Sugar collection?  Were you just as impressed?

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas :: 12th Day

"On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

The Love, Laughter, and Joy of Christmas!!"

 {LOVE seeing all of my friends and their creative Christmas cards displayed!}

{Seeing the JOY of them getting to open their 1st gift of the night is priceless.}

{LAUGHING every time I drink from my "tipsy" Santa glass!}

{LOVE seeing her excitement of searching through her stocking!}

It has been one wonderful and crazy Christmas Day!  Even though we are pooped from the days events - early to rise, children hyper than ever over their new presents and candy, candy, and more candy, struggling to get last minute gifts wrapped, traveling into Atlanta to visit with family, and stuffing our faces, it's all been worth it.

I hope you all had just as wonderful and blessed a Christmas as I did.  No new lip gloss or blush could match the love, laughter, and joy that comes with this meaningful day filled with family.  (Although, you know I'd never knock a nice new fancy lip product - wink,wink!)

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!!!

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas :: 11th Day

"On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Facial Treatment Masks!!"

{Sk-II Facial Treatment Masks, set of 10, $125.}

These are one of those products I dream of having the extra cash to splurge on myself, so it just seemed fitting for them to be on my "wish" list.  To be honest the main reason is because I know that one of the most famous makeup artists out there, Pat McGrath, always carries these beauties in her kits (apparently she carries 80 trunks of makeup with her to big runway jobs - I have 3!!).  Nothing is more relaxing than a good facial mask, and I have a feeling these blow away all of their competitors.

And if you check out the brand ambassadors for Sk-II, it will make you a believer in their products.  Here is one of their most identifiable ambassadors and her 41 year old skin that I am super impressed by (she's actually 43 now, but this pic is 2 yrs old)...

{Actress Cate Blanchett, via HarpersBazaar.com}

These are pricey pricey I know, but I have a feeling they are totally worth the splurge.  If my true love had a really big bank account, I'd be begging for these wonder masks.

Here's the last of my gift wrap inspiration.  I love the idea of cutting out an INITIAL for the gift recipient and displaying it on their present...

{I'm also a big fan of the baby blue and red theme!}

We're almost through the 12 days!!  Here are days 10/9, 8/7, six, five, four, three, two, one.

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas :: 9th & 10th Day

{Audrey Hepburn with the ultimate-festive-glittery-winged-holiday eye look!}

This picture inspired me for my 9th & 10th day cosmetic choices, because with the big day being right around the corner along with New Years Even approaching, who wouldn't want to glitter and shine for both occasions??

"On the 9th and 10th day of Christmas my true love gave to me....

Glitter and eyyyye pencils!!"

{9th Day - Make Up For Ever Glitters, ($14)}

~  AND ~
{10th Day - Kat Von D Starry Eyes Autograph Pencil Set, ($30)}

I love the idea of having loose glitters on hand for adding a little extra pizzazz in my makeup look! And these MUFE glitters come in multiple fun and festive shades that you can apply on top of lip glosses or apply wet to your skin or shadow.  These scream New Years Eve party!

And I've been impressed with every Kat Von D product I've ever bought, so I know I would dig all of these waterproof creamy liners that come in one fun set!  There's wearable blacks and browns to fun shades of blues and greens.  I'm not sure when and where I'd pull off the yellow liner, but all of the other ones would get tons of daily wear!

Would you sport this extreme sparkly look for the holidays?

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas :: 7th & 8th Day

I just realized that we only have 4 more days until Christmas (gulp!) so I'm having to do some last minute scrambling to get all 12 days in of my Cosmetic Christmas before we run out of time!  Without further ado...

"On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me...
7 days of Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo!!"

{Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo, 2.5oz, $21.}

This is a product I probably could utilize 7 days a week!!  Whenever I get my hair professionally cut, my stylist always sprays dry shampoo at the roots right after she's done, to give it some texture and to hold off the greasy hair!   It actually makes my blow out seem to stay longer as well without falling.

{Example - 2 days of using dry shampoo to get this wavy look.
It would never work on clean hair.}

As a mom who takes little time to do my hair (I admittedly spend more time on my makeup routine), dry shampoo saves my life.  This one had the best reviews on Sephora.com and says it smells like lemon verbena, which is one of my all time fave fresh scents.  I think any female would find this to be a good and practical beauty gift!

"On the eight day of Christmas my true love gave to me...
8 Fresh Sugar Mini Lip Treatments!!"
{Fresh Sugar Soiree Mini Lip Collection of 8, $65.}

I'm a huge fan of Fresh Sugar lip balms - colored and colorless.  There is something in these things that make them addictive to apply to my lips.  This collection of every color in the very wearable rainbow of lip balms, would be the ultimate gift in my opinion - even for women that are wary of lipsticks or glosses.  These things give you just enough color, and are tiny and easy to put in any size purse! I've seriously seen this collection advertised in every gift giving section of every December issue in the beauty magazines I subscribe to - it must be a hot ticket item!!

Twelve Days of Cosmetic Christmas :: 6th Day

"On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....

6 Buxom Lip Glosses!!!"
{Buxom Time To Shine Mini Collection of 6, $29.}

I actually lucked out on this set actually containing 6 mini lip plumping glosses to go along with my 6th day!!  This group of lip beauties is the perfect gift for any lady in your life that needs some help in the plumper pout department. I myself belong to that category, so I have already treated myself to this set - What??!  It was only 29 bucks for 6 lip colors that I would actually wear!!!  So you've lucked out with a personal view on this gift idea!

Here's a looksy at yours truly, sporting two colors from the collection layered.
 "Sugar" with "White Russian" in the center of my lips.

{Doing my best Vanna White impression to show you how big each gloss is!}

This mini set comes with 2 different finishes -creams and shimmers. There are 4 fairly neutral shades along with 2 deep pink and magenta ones.  They give you a pleasant tingle to your lips, making you think your lips are plumping up!!  Great tactic.  I don't end up with obvious Angelina lips, but they're a definite improvement when wearing these!

*For those who are wondering, my blush and nail color are both by MAC.  Blush is "Pinch O Peach" and the nail color was discussed here.*

Click here to see what you've missed on days five, four, three, two, and one!

What do you think of the Buxom lip plumpers?  Would you want Santa to hook you up with these tiny glosses?

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas :: 5th Day

"On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

5 GOLDEN DIORIFIC TUBES OF LIPSTICK!!"

{Christian Dior "Diorific" lip colors, $36}

I chose this product for the 5th day for the obvious reason, the golden-like tube, but also because what woman wouldn't give her right arm (ok, maybe a weeks paycheck) to own multiple shades of luxurious Dior lipstick??  Their website describes it as:

"The legendary accessory for lips with a Haute Couture finish."

Well there ya go - that sounds pretty special to me!!  This stay put formula will make you a believer in pricey lip color because it's the perfect blend of not too shiny where it slides around and not too matte where it drags across the lips - it's just right.  Here's a great review of it from Temptalia.com.

And of course, the tube feels so fabulous and fancy when you're holding and applying it, it's reason enough to own one - or five!

My latest installment in the gift wrap inspiration comes from a personal dear friend of mine, Emily, who has been offering up her professional gift wrapping services here in town (isn't that a fun entrepreneurial idea??). She wrapped up this present for one of my gifts I sent her and it turned out gorgeous!!

{Obviously for a little girl - my niece!}

This shows you how using something as simple as brown paper as the backdrop to wrap a gift can be turned into something extraordinary!!   She adorned it with brightly colored tulle and two tiny glittery ornaments (from Wal-Mart, so not too $$) and VOILA - a special and originally wrapped gift!

Take No Day For Granted

I will preface this post by saying, I always want my blog to be a positive, inspiring, and fun place to visit.  Even though the majority of it is beauty related, I do have a family, and they are always foremost in my mind. Hence, I could not continue writing blog posts about lip glosses and celebrity looks until I acknowledged the events that went down in Connecticut last Friday.

{These 3 smiles are my everything.}

All of the details that keep coming out from that horrible scene, never get easier to hear.  Especially when you have children of your own - no matter what age they are.  I have teared up more times than I care to admit listening to it on TV, radio, or even talking about it with friends.  Not because I know any of the families or victims personally, but because it could have just as easily happened to any one of us. I have two elementary school aged children who go to a public school, I am a mom, and I have many close friends who are teachers.  But does this make me want to shelter my kids, keep them at home in a bubble every day just in case something bad should happen one day?  No.  That's not living life.

With that being said, I honestly don't know how I would ever be able to go on if any one of my kids were taken from me in any capacity.  However,  I know that such a thing happens every day to others, even when it's not due to such an unthinkable and evil act.  Bad things happen to innocent people, I know.  But it still doesn't make it any easier to swallow.  Thankfully my parents brought me up in a church where I know there is a better place for us all after our physical bodies have left this earth.  This verse gives me hope that those 26 adults and children who were taken away from their families, are now in a joyous and safe place - heaven.
John 16 : 22
"So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you."

{One of many joyful shots from our family Christmas card shoot.}

If there is one thing I have taken away from this tragedy, it's that I need to take no morning that I wake up for granted, to hug my children more, and to let them know how much they mean to me. Often. (Wait that's more than one, but they all relate to the same idea.)  I know I cannot shelter them from all of the evil that exists in the world, but I can at least build them up with enough love that whenever they encounter that evil (a bully, mean boss, ugly gossip, etc), they know that I'm on their side.

So despite all of the scary, depressing, and horrible things that do happen around this world, I believe there are still good things and people in this same world.  My heart truly goes out to all of those directly affected by this tragedy and that same heart hopes that all others will try to do better and love more in their every day actions.  Take no day for granted.

*These 2 photos are only a couple of many that my fantastic and talented photographer (and friend!) Abbey of Dylan Blue Photography took for our family Christmas card this year.  I can't thank you enough Abbey for capturing everyones smiling faces in these photos.  You can follow her work on Facebook.*

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas :: 4th Day

"On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me... 4 La Mer Products!!!"
{La Mer "The Ageless Collection," $500.}

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with skincare products in the attempt to keep the current wrinkles that I have, the ONLY wrinkles I have.  La Mer is one of those high end skincare lines that you always hear about Hollywood types relying on to keep their skin as youthful and wrinkle free as possible.  I've never used an actual La Mer product, but never say never.

This Ageless Collection actually contains 4 important products for keeping those wrinkles at bay :

1. moisturizer
2. regenerating serum
3. eye concentrate
4. lifting intensifier

{Apparently 41 yr old Christina Applegate is a La Mer user + believer.}

One interesting thing I read about this line, was that it was developed by an aerospace physicist, Dr. Max Hubert - well, that is reason enough for me to trust this line!   Sea kelp and bio-fermentation are the secret ingredients and processes used to make this powerful stuff.  And no, I have zero idea what bio-fermentation is, but it sounds really powerful and smart!!

Santa, if you're listening, I'd seriously love to own these 4 pieces of magic potions for my wrinkles.

On the third, second, and first day of Christmas my true love gave me these things!

Have you ever used any La Mer products before?  Are they worth the price tag?

Winter Green

Sometimes even a nail polish color can influence my makeup look for the day.  So my recent MAC purchase from their "Glamour Daze" collection got me into the winter green spirit...

{MAC polish in "In the Limelight" ($17.50.)}

This creamy mint green isn't the dark winter-like nail color I usually go for, but is actually a refreshing change that goes towards the turquoise side.  So after painting my nails the night the package came to my house (seriously), the next morning I felt the need to try mint green on my eyes!  I love that a small dose of this shade actually made my eyes pop like they had Christmas lights around them!!

I used a mint green color from my E.l.f. palette (here) and applied it just from the lash line right up to the crease.  I also put a dab of it in the inner corners and outer corners of my eyes for a bit of sparkle!  Then I grounded it and added dimension by adding a brown shadow right in the crease, along with a Physicians Formula Eye Booster in brown liquid liner right on top.  Blush is "melon" by Sonia Kashuk and lips are a combo of L'Oreal Infallible gloss in "sangria" with Too Faced Glamour Gloss in "barely legal" in the center.

Even though I think this color scheme would look way better on more tan skin, I think I pulled it off by adding plenty of blush and a neutral lip color.

What do you think of this shade?  Does it look winter-y green or spring-y green??

Festive Makeup In A Flash

I have come to realize in my old(er) age, that sometimes I just can't take 20- 30 minutes to pull a makeup look together, as much as I'd like to.  (Here's a recent post confirming just that showcasing my early morning face.)  With the holidays upon us, I feel like I need to have a quick and easy go-to look when I need to look festive in a flash!  Here is such a look and its 3 main components...

1.  Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise liquid liner in "black" ($8)
2.  Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in "Rose" ($40)
3.  Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick in "Cherries In The Snow" ($7)

If you want to see my original posting on the iconic "Cherries in the Snow" shade, click here.  My skin was a bit darker in the posting, but it still works!

{I wouldn't dare compare myself to Gwen, but isn't our look similar?? Via.}

If you want to use your own products to get my festive look - all you have to do is:

  • create a thin winged eye,
  • shimmery cheeks,
  • and a matte but bright lip!
I like to balance out the shimmer by not having it on the lips AND cheeks, so pick one or the other.  If you're interested in my shadow colors, they're both by MAC Cosmetics -  "vellum" (which isn't available anymore, try "crystal avalanche") from the lash line to crease and in the crease is "sketch."  Oh, and of course the sock bun for zero hair time.  Are y'all tired of me talking about this hair do yet??

If you had to create a festive look with only 3 main products - which ones would you use?

Twelve Days Of Cosmetic Christmas : 3rd Day

"On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me... 3 sets of faaalllse laaaashes!!"

I would want :
1. a basic natural look,
2. a more dramatic pair,
3. then an all out glamour pair!

{Natural ::  MAC Cosmetics #33 lashes. }
*Original blog posting with these strip lashes included here.*

{Dramatic ::  Ardell "Wispies" strip lashes.}
*Original blog posting with these lashes included here.*

{Glamour :: Carrie Underwood wearing Smoke and Mirrors Beauty lashes in "Nashville" via}

Granted the first two types of lashes are some that I already own, but I can ALWAYS use some extra new pairs laying around the house, and these are some of my favorite.  Stephen Moleski, who is a celeb MUA to the likes of Kim Kardashian, Tiffany Fallon (who I've actually had the pleasure of working on here), and Mel B, has created his own line of falsies, Smoke and Mirrors Beauty.  His lashes are made from the finest human hair and have a silicone band which makes his strips more flexible and comfy to wear.  I'd love to own this pair that Carrie Underwood's MUA used on her for the 2010 People's Choice Awards.  Check out this future bride I just worked with the other day on her trial run and the Carrie inspired look I created for her!

My gift wrap inspiration for today would be to buy a big spool of red velvet ribbon and a few small jingle bells to add to any wrapping paper for wrapping tiny gifts like this.  Instantly cute and bells bring a magical and musical twist to the gift!

Merry Manicure

I have to have my nails painted at all times.  It's kind of like I have to have lip gloss on at all times.  I mean, nail polish is basically makeup for your hands, right?!  And we all know how un-finished I feel without my makeup on!  So this Christmas I'm getting into the holiday spirit with a very traditional and straight forward merry manicure of green and red!

{Rimmel 60 seconds "Camouflage" polish (green) and O.P.I "Pretty & Privileged" (red).}

{Vivian HAD to have her nails painted green too!  She was so proud to show them off.}

Like I said, my Christmas manicure is pretty obvious choice of using a green and red shimmer for my color scheme.  Each hand has an alternate accent nail which is about as crazy as I usually go!  But if I had more time on my hands and my hands weren't always knee deep in makeup and messing my with kids, I'd do one of these fancy festive looks...

{I need this matte navy blue in my life, O.P.I "russian navy" - so sophisticated!}

{If you've got lots of time on your hands - how fun is this tree look to try here??}

What's your favorite merry manicure look?  Do you adorn your nails with fun and festive colors for the holidays or do you keep it simple?
