Girls Night Out

I am excited about this weekend because I'm having a much needed girls night out with some of my other mommy friends I haven't hung with in awhile and we are staying in a...wait for it...a hotel room...Woo hoooo!  This is a big deal because there will be NO baby monitors to listen out for one whole night - just nice uninterrupted sleep!!  We're gonna party like Madonna and Katy...

{Crown, sequins, martinis + champagne = fun girls night out! Image via}

Ok, so maybe partying like these two is stretching it.  Mainly because I'm guessing their lifestyles are way different than mine - Katy has no kids and Madonna has three but I'm assuming she usually has a lot of help with them (nannies!).  So they probably can party like this without feeling the repercussions the next day of caring for needy kiddos.! Oh, and they are kinda famous, so wearing a crown and full mesh attire is completely acceptable when they go out.

Either way, I know we are going to have a blast being together just doing girly things like shopping, dining, and there will probably be some makeovers involved before going out:)

Here are some girly links from the week I have enjoyed :

1. I can feel us ladies jamming to Blurred Lines while getting ready to go out this weekend.

2.  Enter to win this awesome summer beauty giveaway from Pretty In My Pocket before July 1st.

3.  OMG, Khloe Kardashian Odom's closet.

4.  Wackiest Oreo cookie flavors.

5.  Criss cross lashes will make your tiny eyes look bigger!

6.  I'm so buying this Benefit 15 hour primer on my girls shopping trip.

7.  Pop a bottle of bubbly for more brain power!

8.  Patriotic nail art from Instyle.com.

Between me and my 3 girlfriends we have 12 small children between us. We NEED this one night out. I hope the Ritz Carlton is ready for us...

Who else is celebrating a girls night out this weekend?!

The Most Natural Way To Fill In Your Eye Brows

Filling in eye brows seems to be one of the trickiest makeup techniques for most women.  But it doesn't have to be intimidating if you are looking for a little more fullness and not to completely recreate a whole new brow shape!  The most natural way to go is NOT the pencil which can look super fake and drawn on, GO eye shadow!! Just a little bit of shadow can make a dramatic difference!

Only tools necessary :

1. Angled bristled makeup brush, mine is by MAC #208 angled brush.
2. Long wear eye shadow, like this L'Oreal Infallible shadow in "Continuous Cocoa"

*Choose a shadow color that most closely matches your natural brow hair (not the hair on your head!)or go one shade lighter for the most natural look.*

STEP 1 : Apply your foundation, a concealer, or an eyelid primer around the enter brow hair area with your finger or a sponge to create a base for the powder to sit and soak into.

STEP 2:  Brush your entire brow hairs in a downward motion to see the natural arch shape along the top of the brow line.  This shows you the highest point of your arch which is your guideline for how high you should go filling in.

STEP 3:  For deeper color of your shadow, you can wet your brush with a few drops of water before dipping it in your shadow color, or for the most natural look, use the shadow dry.  (I wet my brush with this shadow) Start filling in the barest parts of your brow line with short strokes.

STEP 4 :  Brush your brow hairs back up to see your progress.  Use a brow brush or an old toothbrush.

STEP 5 : Repeat steps 3 & 4 until you get your desired fullness.

There you go!  The most natural looking full brows without the hassle of pencils.  Of course if you're looking for perfectly symmetrical Hollywood type brows, there are many other steps you could add to this routine.  Maybe I'll save that intricate tutorial for another day if you are interested in seeing a super high maintenance brow!

Is filling in eyebrows part of your makeup routine?

Wednesday PowWow : What Is Your Love Language With Lip Color?

You've heard of the 5 Love Languages in a relationship right? If not, follow this link to catch up.  Now let's translate this idea to your love of lip colors and which one you have the best "relationship" with...

NUDE LIPS : MAC lipstick in "Myth"

PINK LIPS : Revlon Lip Butter in "Sorbet"

CORAL LIPS :  Pouts & Winks in "Posie"

RED LIPS : Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in "Kiss of Life"

Today I'm wondering which lip color shade most of you emotionally connect with that makes you feel the best?? Is it nude, pink, coral, red, or some other shade?  Don't laugh - the right lip color can be life changing for some of us and emotionally fulfilling...yes, I went there!!  Now if you want to get into what your partner finds to be your lip color language, that could be a whole other blog!! I did ask my husband which of these shades he preferred on me just for fun, and he said it was a tie between nude and coral.  Luckily, I would have chosen the coral too.  I knew we are on the right track after almost 12 years of marriage!!

Share with me in the comments below your lip color language!

Pin-Tastic Tuesday

I don't use Pinterest nearly enough.  It's really a wealth of information + inspiration all in one visual spot!!  I thought it would be fun for a Tuesday to share with you all some of my recent favorite "pins" to round out the month of June with...

STYLE : CASUAL BUT COOL

I love denim, all kinds and types.  These pics of Alessandra Ambrosio and Olivia Palermo sporting different lengths with flats, non fussy tops, and casual accessories gives me good inspiration for packing for my trip out west next month!

HAIR + MAKEUP : EFFORTLESSLY FRESH

I'm growing my bangs out, and I want them to eventually look like Penelope's - and if I could get the face to go with them that'd be great too, ha!!!  I always come back to this picture of Blake Lively and her shimmery eyes with punchy matte lip - gonna rock this fresh faced look all summer!  Lip shade possibilities here and here.

HOME : DIY PROJECTS

I never implement DIY project ideas, but I'm determined to do these two.  The first one is taking my kids names and framing them on their bedroom doors along with the meaning of their names.  The second one is taking the notes from the song you and your hubby danced to at your wedding and blowing it up and framing it.  If you were curious, our wedding song was by country singer Rhett Atkins, "More Than Everything."  Pretty sappy song, but awesomely sweet lyrics.

RECIPES :  SWEET TREATS

I love a fun party cocktail, and if I ever have a reason to make these champagne jello shooters with pop rocks on top, I'm going to!!  And all 3 of my kids and I fall hard for cinnamon rolls, and here's the closest recipe you can get to a Cinnabon one.  This could be dangerous for my summer figure but who cares!!

I could literally spend allll day on Pinterest and not get tired of it - a lot of my favorite people, friends, and bloggers are all on there too!

Are you on Pinterest? What are your favorite things to look for - recipes, style inspiration, new makeup looks, interior decorating ideas?  I would have to say I really like looking for easy recipe ideas (emphasis on the 'easy'), home interior inspirations because that's something I majorly struggle with,  and I LOVE love pinning inspirational quotes, they make my day:)

Royal In Blue

Essie polish in "Bouncer It's Me"  |   NYX Studio Liner Liquid in "Extreme Blue"

I'm only throwing up multiple peace signs so you can see how well my nails and eyeliner match! Ha!! There's nothing like a swipe of royal blue eyeliner or shadow to make my brown eyes come to life!  I just discovered these NYX liquid liner pens and they are my new favorites (I also bought the purple and brown metallic shades!).   Vivian was begging for me to "color her" with this liner, hence the V on her tiny little hand to show you how skinny the wand is!  Luckily that satisfied her makeup craving for now.

This Essie shade is part of their neon collection which actually has a more matte finish and is pretty sheer.  But since I prefer shiny nails, I added my go-to Seche Vite top coat.  I also just got a tiny cross ring that has started decorating my middle finger - no finger left behind now with all my rings!  (You might have already seen it if you follow me on Instagram, @JennySueMakeup!)

I'm really feeling royal blue because it's got the vibe of artsy, cool, and exotic all at the same time! I wonder if it would be too much if I added this J.Crew maxi dress to my liner + nail combo???  Peace, love, and royal blue to you all this weekend!!

How To Fake A Vacation Bronze Without The Bahamas

We know the sun is bad bad bad for your skin...we should be wearing 75 SPF at all times! But there is something about a pretty, healthy, warm, sunny glow you can only get from sitting by the pool or beach right? Wrong.
Here's how I go from looking like a bored housewife to a bronzed beach babe without the sun...

Before and afters terrify me but are really the best way for you to see how the combination
of the following products really pull the look together.

Revlon Nearly Naked foundation in #150, ($10)  +
LORAC TANtalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer, ($32)

1.  Make a base.  You gotta have a little foundation for a more flawless face. I used Revlon's new Nearly Naked foundation mixed with just a tad of my FAVORITE body bronzer, LORAC Tantalizer (I live and breathe for this stuff), and then applied all over.  I even mix the Tantalizer with some regular moisturizer with SPF to warm up my neck and chest color to match my face (because you don't need foundation on your neck right?!!).

2. Spot treat the dark circles and discolored problem areas.  I use Maybelline's Dream Lumi Touch concealer stick in "nude" ($8) because it's got a luminous quality and isn't super matte or heavy which wouldn't look very beachy.  It's got just enough coverage but gives a nice dewy appearance.

3. Lightly highlight.  A little extra shimmer along the cheekbones and down the bridge of the nose is just enough to reflect the light.  Too Faced Candlelight Highlighting Duo Powder ($30) adds the perfect amount of shimmer.

4. Don't forget your cheeks and lips.  Another favorite of mine, Nars The Multiple stick in "Portofino" ($39), is the perfect all purpose shade for some warm color on both cheeks and lips without looking too made up.  I apply this stick to my lips with a lip brush FYI.

Voila!! A not-so-fake tan without the self tanner or the sunshine!
What are your favorite products to fake a vacation bronze?

Wednesday PowWow : Which Summertime Trend Will You Follow?

There are a lot of beauty + style trends that I'm not afraid to play follow the leader with.  However, there are some that my 35 year old self knows better than to try and pull off.  Here are some popular trends right now...
TREND #1 :  OMBRE LIPS
{Image via}

Ombre Lips - Refinery29.com has a great quick video tutorial here on this recent trend.  It's waaay too high maintenance for me, (yes that's possible) and although it does have an artsy cool look about it, it is no where near practical for my mommy life.  I look into a mirror enough during a day just to make sure my lip color is still there, but this look would put me into the loony bin trying to keep the colors just perfect and ombre-ed!! The craziest lip look I've ever sported was this two-toned look.

TREND #2 : CROPPED TOPS
{Brooklyn Decker via}

Crop Tops - I birthed 3 kids and my belly has never been the same.  It could definitely be worse, but it still should NOT be caught dead - or alive - in a crop top.  But they seem to be all the rage in Hollywood.  FabSugar.com shows a few examples of cute celebs with rock hard abs sporting this look, some even slightly flattering and not trashy!  Still, not for me, no way. Makes me reminisce on my Panama City spring break days.

TREND #3 : TALON NAILS
 {Fergie via}

Talon Nails - Super long pointy finger nails have been a trend among some major rock chicks - think Lady Gaga and RiRi.  I'm on the fence with this one.  It can look scary if painted the wrong color (neon green?!) but kinda cool if done more muted with classic colors.  RealBeauty.com showcases a few takes on talons here. Again, not a practical look for me, I'd end up stabbing one of my kids while trying to button their shirt.

TREND #4 : DENIM CUT OFFS
{Halle Berry via.}

Denim Cut Offs - I've shot down most of these trends so far, but this one I can definitely do.  It's of course all about the fit, but when done right (I've done enough squats and self tanner) I like its casual ease.  Halle Berry is 40 and rockin' this look just right and still looks super cool.  I think I need to own these Rag & Bone cutoffs to channel my inner Halle.

TREND #5 : FLOWER CROWNS
{Kiera Knightley via}

Flower Crowns - This look goes one of two ways for me - uber hippie chic or 10 year old flower girl in your cousins wedding.  I am neither.  Either way, if I tried to sport one, my husband would think, 1. I'd lost my mind or 2. lost my hemp necklace or 3. wonder if he had missed Halloween.  Glamour.com tries to show you how to wear it without looking too out-there, which in my mind says to me, it's a trend that's trying too hard in the first place.

So for today's PowWow, I want to know which of these trends you are on board with this summer or would rather jump ship than wear...

Happy Birthday Hubby

Today is my husband's birthday.  He gets better in every way with age, seriously, it's so not fair.

{Celebrating this morning with our kiddos that keep us both young at heart!!}

One of my favorite quotes on birthdays...

 "Birthdays are good for you.
Statistics show that the people who have the most, live the longest."

{Us celebrating last night.}

They say "laughter is the best medicine," and I think that applies to life in general, and especially getting older!  The older we get, the harder it is to buy birthday gifts because we don't really need anything, so I bought tickets for us to see comedian Daniel Tosh last night here in town.  He was a riot, kinda crass, okay a lot crass!, but ultimately hilarious and just the perfect night out for an adult birthday celebration.  When you get to be our age with 3 children, just a little time away where a babysitter can do dinner and bedtime, is the best gift you could give yourself, ha!!

So happy happy birthday to my favorite person in the world.  I am so thankful you were born under the Gemini sign because apparently, me being an Aquarius, I am the perfect match for you!! Check our compatibility out here, it is almost spot on for both of our personalities.  (I know that's random, but I find matchmaking astrology very interesting!!)

How do you like to celebrate getting older?

My Top 2 MAC Brown Eye Shadow Shades

There are a gazillion choices out there when it comes to picking a brown eye shadow.  Here are 2 of my favorites by MAC cosmetics that I can always count on...

My MAC shadow pan with my 2 faves, from left to right (with flash) :

Left - "CORK." A muted matte golden brown.
Right - "SWISS CHOCOLATE." Muted matte reddish brown.

How I wore these two together:

I applied the lighter shadow CORK along the crease and highlighted just the outer corner by blending in the SWISS CHOCOLATE (remember how to use the letter "V" tutorial here and tape trick here!).  Finished off with a dark brown winged eye liner on top, Physician's Formula, blogger here, and liquid lipstick by Kat Von D, blogged here.

Of course I love my shimmery brown friends but I figured it was time to give the matte shadows some love because they are super wearable, very sophisticated, and grown up looking for every age!

Have you tried these 2 MAC shades before? What are some of your favorite brown eye shadow shades?  Share in the comments below!

Celebrating Fathers

{My dad and me circa early 1980's...can't you tell!}

Margaret Truman on Fathers:
"It's only when you grow up , and step back from him, or leave him for your own career and your own home - it's only then that you can measure his greatness and fully appreciate it.
Pride reinforces love.

I totally agree with this.  I am so proud of my dad and who he is, that it makes my love grow more and more for him as an adult because I realize what all he's done throughout my childhood to make sure I had everything I needed.  Not just materialistic things, but he instilled a lot of things in me that make me a better, more independent, and loving person today.  He has set by example, not just words.

{Dads should always hold their daughter's hand!}

Here's what makes my dad so cool:

  • he could kick anyones butt in trivia...anyone,
  • he's a math wiz (he's a CPA, why couldn't have I gotten that smarty pants gene??),
  • an incredible golfer (also, didn't get that athletic bone!),
  • a very loyal man, seriously loyal,
  • he has great hair and an incredible metabolism (thank God he did pass those traits down to me!)
  • and everyone likes to be around him, including his grandchildren!! - he's a truly fun guy.

In addition to my own dad, I of course have to send a big shout out to my hubby who is also an AWESOME dad to my kids and is currently setting an amazing example of what it means to be a loving and involved father.  I seriously could NOT have dreamed up a more perfect and caring father to my children than Scott.  I love you more than you know.

Luckily my dad and mom are coming to visit us this weekend to help celebrate the big Father's Day weekend so I'm sure we'll do some fun activities together and maybe even bust out the roller skates...

*Thanks to my mom for hooking me up with these vintage daddy/daughter pics - can you believe how much my own kids actually look like me when compared to the above photos?? The gene pool is crazy.*
What are you doing to celebrate the father figure in your life this weekend?

Candy Colored Lips

I am not scared of candy colored lipstick.  In fact, with all of the shockingly bright colored lip choices out there this summer, why it makes me feel like a kid in a candy store!!

NEW! Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids in "Vivid Rose," $5.99.

Real colors Hydra Lips Waterproof Gel Liner in "Pinup Pink," $5.50.

If you are scared of wearing this pop of color, don't be. You know why, because you don't have to do much else with your makeup because you're making such a statement in that one focal area!  I am a big fan of Maybelline's whole new line of Vivids, and they've got a shade for any skin tone.

How I wear it:

1.  Fill in your entire mouth with a matching lip liner for a precise mouth. This creates a good base for your lipstick to not feather also.
2.  Layer your bright colored lipstick.  Apply a layer, then blot with a tissue, then apply a second.
3. For extra staying power, you can add a couple swipes of of loose translucent powder thru a thin layer of tissue on top of your mouth with a small fluffy makeup brush, but this will matte out the lip texture slightly.

I paired my vivid mouth with :

Too Faced Matte Eye Shadow Collection
Physician's Formula Lash Boosting Liquid Liner
Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Foundation
Bobbi Brown Rose Shimmer Brick

Have you gotten into the shockingly bright candy colored lips of summer trend??
