Monday Beauty Mantra

"Learn to appreciate what you HAVE before time makes
you appreciate what you HAD."
author unknown

This is a mantra I need to constantly work on remembering.  I have been known to wish away the 3 year old (and sometimes 5 year old!) temper tantrums, wish that my 9 year old house had drapes and rugs in rooms that still aren't decorated the way I want, and complaining about how out of shape I feel.  Well one day when I have a teenage daughter and sons who want to ignore me completely at times, I'll probably want those quick spurts of temper tantrums that usually end up with hugs 15 minutes later because they completely forgot what the tantrum was about!  And this house I live in, is where all 3 of my kids were born which means more than the way it's currently decorated.  Feeling out of shape?  Well, I'm only 36 years old so I've probably got more potential energy and ability to start working out harder than I will years down the road!  There's no time like the present when it comes to getting into any age.

The photo above is actually a couple of months old  and I took it while we were exploring the park and Vivian was fascinated with the ducks.  In all honesty, I don't do enough of this with her or the other two because I seem so consumed with keeping my freelance makeup business thriving or consistently blogging and keeping up with social media.  If I were to really put this mantra into action, I would soak up more moments playing with my kids or starting a new hobby, than say wasting countless hours on Facebook seeing what everyone else is doing (I've actually gotten a lot better and moving away from FB - Twitter is where I waste most of my time!!).

From now on I'm going to appreciate my small children because they will get older.  I will appreciate my lack of wrinkles on my face and the few gray hairs I have right now because I know they'll both only get worse.  And I will appreciate my workload where it is today because I still have the flexibility to be at home with my kids and to work around their schedules and extra curricular activities.

Happy start of the week to you!  What are you currently appreciative for?

Pure Barre Is Pure Crazy...Great Exercise!

Have you ever taken an exercise class where you thought your muscles were burning so bad they might actually catch on fire after the first 5 minutes - and you're not even holding a single weight (yet) or running....that's the Pure Barre experience.

I was recently given the chance to try a Pure Barre class here in Athens, Ga for free.  I knew I had to take the opportunity after all of the amazing things I had heard about it being THE hot new thing in fitness. The fact that it is rooted in ballet, which I used to be really good at (you do use an actual ballet barre for half the class), I thought it would be fairly easy.  I also work out at a gym about twice a week, which I thought meant I was in pretty decent shape.  Boy, was I wrong on both levels.

Here are some photos of the Athens studio and all it has to offer plus my personal experience at the bottom of the photos.

Bullet points about my Pure Barre experience:
  • Pure Barre is a workout that hits every single muscle in your body and is like a fusion of ballet, pilates, and strength training.  Detailed description of their technique used HERE.
  • I had no idea that doing a class that consisted of teeny tiny movements (like inches) and lots of "tucking" would make my muscles shiver and quake like never before.  I found myself actually wincing, a lot!
  • The class was non stop, meaning you don't take breaks, so you get your monies worth in those 55 minutes.
  • The music was lively and loud - which I LOVE.  I cannot workout effectively without energetic music - it mentally helps me to keep moving.  Which is why I struggle with lower key workouts like yoga and pilates.  I need some pep in my step and music motivates me.
  • The instructor Mary Frances (shown above with me at the barre on the floor) was very encouraging and hands on showing me how I needed to fix my poses to get the best results. Which I felt she was fixing me about every 8 minutes bc I was a hot mess!!
  • Even though it's a group class, luckily no one was starting at me or noticed how confused and struggling I was (or how often the instructor was beside me) because everyone else is so focused on just surviving this class they don't have time to look at you!
  • This studio offers some beautiful high end workout clothing brands you can't find anywhere else in Athens, plus they carry my FAVE candle line Votivo (Red Currant-best.scent.ever), and really cute hair tie accessories!
I appreciated the constant help from Mary Frances because you know what, I am sore on every inch of my body today...every inch.  If she had let me go it alone, I probably wouldn't feel the burn where I needed to!  Where I'm most impressed that I'm the sorest - my muffin top tummy area and the sides of my butt.  Those are two areas where I can almost never seem to find the right workout for and struggle to make tighter. The fact I'm feeling the heat in those places today, means I can actually work those hard to focus areas.

Super cute and friendly staff from left to right:
Instructor Mary Frances, owner Connie Popwell, and Claire with their PR.

The Athens location and staff was super warm and welcoming which I was thankful for since they are a boutique-type studio which can be slightly intimidating.  Connie the owner, is definitely passionate about her business and you can see that because the class before me (which she is also an instructor) and the one I was in, was packed with Pure Barre devotes!  You can follow the Athens crew on Facebook and check out their class schedules here.

Even though I am paying for a gym membership right now, I am going to find a way to get back into some of these classes because I have no doubt they would change my body for the better.  Once I get over how amazingly sore I am today however...wink wink:)  If you live in or around the Athens area, be sure to stop by their location this Sunday March 30th for a Sip & Shop date to benefit 2 awesome organizations here in town - Extra Special People and Project Safe!

Thanks again to the Pure Barre Athens staff for having me and I hope to get back in there soon!

Beauty Do Or Don't :: Bleached Brows

I am very open minded when it comes to pretty much anything beauty related.  But there is ONE thing I have never experimented with...

Bleached Brows.  The first image that comes to mind of this look is Rooney Mara in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.  I've done a few out of the box beauty looks in the past like sticker eyeliner and lips, caviar manicures, rainbow eyeliner, but the bleached brow takes beauty to a whole other level.  It is a true game changer when it comes to switching up your look.  I mean just check out Kendall Jenner above with her side by side pics with natural brow color and her runway bleached look - she looks like a TOTALLY different girl!  It definitely gives your face an "edgy" vibe and puts all of the focus on the eyeballs when your brows are basically invisible.  I don't not like it, I'm just not sure I think it's exactly flattering.

If you were curious as to how you would go about bleaching the brow without the commitment (no bleach needed), here's a good tutorial from  This might just be something I try when I have no where to go outside of my house.  My curiosity as to how I would look is now killing me!

What do you think? Is the bleached brow look something you would sport or would you leave it to the magazines and celebrities?

Video : Airbrushed Complexion With Dior Airflash Spray Foundation

After I saw the magic of the Dior Airflash Spray Foundation and how it was able to cover up my sad varicose veins on my legs (due to pregnancies with my 3 beautiful children - oh the price we mamas pay), I knew I had to buy it to see what it could do for my face.

This is April who is the business manager for Dior at Lenox Bloomingdale's (go see her!), hooking me up with flawless legs before my emcee gig at their recent Beauty Event with the product.
(It was a smashing success by the way! Thanks to everyone who came out! I promise to do a blog post recap very soon.)

Y'all know I don't do many videos.  Mainly because they are SO time consuming to set up, create, and edit.  But my hubby introduced me to a cool new app called Directr, where it makes creating short videos, very easy.  So I decided to take this app for a test spin, and created one to show you how I use the Airflash foundation to create an airbrush machine-like complexion, without the machine. Like I said- these are short videos, so I just show you on one half of my face how it all goes down.

Products used in the video:

Car selfie I posted on Instagram the first day I tried out my Airflash with appropriate hashtag, #NOFILTER

Who out there has tried this airbrush makeup?  What did you think of it?
Also - tell me if you like this little video and if you'd like to see more of them.  I just might be able to swing videos if they can be short and sweet like this one!

*This giveaway is now closed.  Congratulations to the winner, Debbie Haim!  Please email Jennifer at with your contact info!*

I am thrilled to be teaming up once again with my sponsor, Hold Me Company, to give away the newest member to their cosmetic bag family, the MIDDLE SISTER bag!

From top to bottom :
The original Hold Me, the NEW Middle Sister, and Baby bag.

I love all 3 of my HMB's and each size has a special place in my heart.  I like my biggie original for long trips, my baby bag for throwing in my purse, and now the middle sister might be staying in my laptop bag or my car!  I wouldn't want my makeup to travel around in any other fashion, really.  It is made of the most amazing fabric (vegan suede) that is easy to clean and and super durable.  The various sized pockets for your brushes keep them from getting squished and mangled.  The wrap around tie and zipper closures keep your products in place but also gives you some wiggle room to pack them full of your favorite products!

Here's how you can WIN this Lady Mary print Middle Sister bag
On Facebook, "LIKE" the Hold Me Company and JennySue Makeup.  Then come back here and leave a comment below as to where you are in the birth order in your family (are you a first born, the middle child, or an only child like I am? have I ever shared that here?!) and why you could use a new makeup bag.  *Extra bonus points to those who also sign up for my email notifications on the right side of my blog inside the gray box (you'll only get notified when a new blog goes up).

Happy Birthday First Born

Hard to believe that at 10:53pm tonight, my first born baby will officially turn 8 years old.

It's difficult to explain how it feels when one of your children turns another year older.  Of course it is a wonderful and a joyous occasion.  You've been blessed to celebrate another year of their life and look forward to what's ahead in the coming year.  But it is also a time when I look back on old photographs and get very teary eyed (as I'm tearing up right now writing this, pull it together Jennifer!) because it amazes me how quickly time passes by.  I of course don't want him to be 6 months old again (ok, maybe for like a day or two just to be able to hold him in my arms in a blanket!) but it does make me a little sad that my kids are seriously growing up so fast and I wonder if I am taking advantage of every moment.  I hope so.

What I love about Jack is that he wakes up in the best mood, every morning.  He's always smiling, looks on the bright side of everything, he's a rule follower, is incredibly smart (he had 5 words by the time he was 9 months old),  he's ambitious, loves playing video and board games (wish I did, maybe I should start giving in and playing them more often with him), is kind to everyone, and is the best big brother my other two younger children could ask for.  He's the responsible one of the three right now and always looks out for the other two in making sure they don't hurt themselves or get out of line.  He is definitely my eyes and ears when I ask him to be and the best part is, he doesn't mind doing it.  Even though I know he's a wonderful boy, he surprises me daily with his tender heart and kindness.  His teachers and other parents tell me this all of the time, and it makes me smile.

I hope he never loses any of these wonderful qualities and knows how much my husband and I love him.  He is the kid that made me a mom for the very first time, and I will always be grateful for that.

Happy 8th birthday Jack Thomas.  Love, Mom.

Pack A Pretty Punch With Pastel Makeup

It's time to ditch the dark oxblood shades of winter makeup and embrace the feminine watercolor shades of spring!

I recently contributed to the stylish mommy website,, with an article I wrote on how to incorporate these pretty shades into your makeup routine.  You can read my "how to" on their site HERE where they added in some product suggestions.

Here is my personal pictorial on how I added these girly shades into my everyday makeup routine - because pictures speak a thousand words! I started off with just my normal neutral makeup palette of warm taupes and black or brown liner then started to add in these punches of color!

If that ONE swipe of pastel shadow added along the upper lash line isn't enough of a PUNCH once you have applied your cheeks and lips...KEEP GOING!!

Products Used :
Bobbi Brown shadows (old.) Similar lavender + orchid shades - YSL 5 Colour Harmony in Lilac Sky        Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara

And of course don't forget your nails in this pastel palette!  Pastels come in a huge range of options from buttercup yellow, cotton candy pink, to mint green, so have some fun with your mani.  I loved this green I picked because it wasn't a sickly looking yellow green and had just enough of a cool white base to look super girly.  Like I showed here, EVERY eye color can be flattered by a lavender shade of eyeshadow, it just depends on your skin tone as to the intensity you can handle - paler skin likes lighter shades of purple and deep skin tones can go for vibrant and darker lavender!

Will you be incorporating these ladylike shades on your face this spring?

Monday Beauty Mantra

"Be Yourself.  No one can say you're doing it wrong."
Peanuts creator, Charles M. Schulz

One of the biggest things I want to make sure that I instill in my kids as they grow up is that they should never apologize for who they are, what they look like, or what they believe in.  And even though my three have similar traits and features from the outside, they are certainly all very different internally and have their own sense of style already that I like to embrace.

My boys could care less really when it comes to their clothing at their ages right now, but they do have their quirks.  My oldest, Jack, only likes to wear tall socks and is a complete rule follower, he longs to make people happy.  My middle child, Walker, always wants his hair to look perfect and we lovingly compare him to "Animal" from the Muppets because he acts so crazy.  And then there's my sweet 3 yr old Vivian.  She might have more opinions on her clothing and hair than I do at 36.  She hates wearing denim (what?!), only wants to wear leggings, and despite her extreme girly love for lipgloss, she still wants to attempt to hang with everything her brothers do.

I'll be honest, I take great joy in figuring out what I want to wear or look like each day.  It's like I can recreate myself daily.  And when I work with a client, I always start off asking them, "What do YOU want to look like?"  Even though I am considered the expert when it comes to makeup, I want to find out what their current makeup style is and where they want to go with it.  Not everyone wants to wear multiple layers of products and colors like I do everyday.  So what I think is best, isn't always going to be their style.  I'm just there to lead them in the direction they want to go and give them the tools to get there.

Just like the approach I want to be taking with my kids in every aspect of their lives.  I'm there for support, not to completely change them.  Happy Monday everyone!!

*This pic was taken on a visit to their grandmother's hair salon she's been going to since she was a teenager!! My kids had never seen these hair dryers (reminiscent of the ones in the beauty school dropout scene in the movie Grease) and were fascinated by these machines.  Jack thought they looked like space helmets!*

Happy Hostess

I'm getting excitedly nervous about my hostess gig tomorrow morning at Bloomingdale's for their first big beauty event in the Lenox Square store!!  I say nervous, but it's really more happy butterflies because I can't WAIT for all of the fun and beauty education that is about to go down for the entire morning!  All of the women in attendance (including myself!) are going to get schooled on the latest and greatest trends in spring beauty and skincare from the likes of experts from Nars, YSL, Laura Mercier, and many more.

How have I been prepping myself for this makeup date?  Here are the details:

Speaking of nerves - luckily I have a script to go by so certainly there's no way I can screw up the order of the morning and people's names, right...including my own?!  I think what will help with the stage fright is that I am going to finally get a chance to meet a few of my fellow Atlanta blogging friends that I know are going to be there plus some JennySue Makeup followers! Having familiar faces in the crowd always helps and I'm positive it's going to be a GREAT way to start my Saturday morning.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!!

Monday Beauty Mantra

"It's okay to be a glowstick.
Sometimes we need to break, before we shine."
{Photo of Grace Kelly in the movie "To Catch A Thief," 1955.}

It is the start of my kids spring break from school this week.  I wish I could say we have a big beach trip planned to relax in the sun, but we don't.  However,  I'm just happy to have a week without having to wake up super early to get everyone to school and without having to do homework every night (bc yes, even parents have to help with kindergarten and 2nd grade homework!).  And I've decided to take a short blog break as well.  It's much needed especially since my kids are going to be around all day with me - I can't imagine spending their spring break on my computer while they're at home. This is a great excuse for me to just hang with the little people who inspired me to start this "mommy with a makeup problem" blog anyway!

I have been on the verge of a blog burnout so this comes at a good time.  Of course I am SO thankful for the opportunities and places this blog has taken me (one of them below), that I won't be gone for long, but everyone deserves some time off every now and then.  Like this quote suggests, hopefully this little leave of absence will allow me to shine even bigger and brighter after I've had some good mommy/kid time away from the daily routine of creating, editing, and marketing blog posts!  Until then, signing off for a few days and I promise to be back soon!!

*But while I've got you here, I have to remind you that if you're in the Atlanta, Ga area on Saturday March 15th, to make your reservation for the BIG beauty event at Bloomingdale's Lenox I'm hosting.

Here's a reminder what your $25 reservation fee is going to get you :
-that 25 bucks goes toward your makeup purchase credit and your makeover
-traincase FULL of beauty samples with that reservation
-runway show
-get inspired by regional and national makeup artists from the likes of MAC, Nars, Chanel, Laura Mercier, etc
-DJ entertainment
-step up manicure train case set with any purchase over $125
-lots of raffle opportunities throughout the morning of gifts over $250!!

Looks like another reason I need to rest up this week before the morning makeup date!  Hope to see you all there!

#WinTheDay With Superfruit Skin By Clearasil

If my skin looks clear when I roll out of bed, it's going to be a GREAT day no matter what the kids throw at me or the day brings.  Being a wife and mom to 3 and juggling everyone's busy schedules along with running my own small business, the stress of it all can certainly show up in the form of ugly blemishes on my face!  I have that one stubborn spot below my mouth that always creeps up-why do those zits pop up in the!

So thanks to the folks over at Clearasil for hooking me up with three of their newest Daily Clear products to help combat that issue:

  • face wash,
  • scrub,
  • refreshing pads.
All three of these contain the power acne fighting ingredient salicylic acid while also combining the refreshing smell of super fruits like cranberry + raspberries.  These yummy smelling products merged with the ability to keep the pizza face away = how I #WinTheDay.

Yes, I happen to have raspberries around the house because 2 out of my 3 kids LOVE this tasty fruit! Who knew they'd make such a great addition to my product shots??

My all black outfit is complimented by shiny clear skin + my new gold belt + chain mail shoes!

My favorite product has to be the refreshing fruit pads (shown in top shot) because they are out of the ordinary face washes and scrubs of the world.  I typically only wash my skin at night time before bed...because who gets dirty skin while they sleep on clean sheets right??  I have found these are a refreshing way to wake up in the morning and all I have to do is just swipe these bad boy circle pads quickly over my face and I'm done!  No washcloth needed.

Want to try these out for yourself and get your own super fruit clear skin? Then take advantage of their FREE REBATE OFFER HERE within the next week! Get cracking on doing something great and refreshing for your skin!

(And if you're wondering about my lipstick in the picture up top that happens to match the cranberry/raspberry combo perfectly, it's this YSL Sheer Candy #4. My gold chain mail shoes are Steve Madden.)

Wild About Olivia Wilde's Oscar Makeup

I am going to state the obvious.  I know I do not look like, have the same coloring, or bone structure as gorgeous mommy-to-be Olivia, but that doesn't mean I can't attempt her amazing winged Oscar eyes and makeup!

How to get a wing liner look like Wilde:
1. Start your liner by drawing a straight line from the outside in towards the last outside lash depending on how dramatic you want it to go.
2. Create a small triangle shape by connecting the first line towards the center of the lash line.
3.  Then start from the inner tear duct area and follow the lash line along until you reach the triangle.
4.  Fill in the little triangle.
5.  Take a Qtip, then wet the end (yes, I put mine in my mouth for myself, but you can use an eye makeup remover), and start dragging it from the bottom of the triangle and flick it upwards until it's thin enough at the end creating a tail.
6.  Clean up the tail and add mascara on upper and lower lashes.

Products I used:

I tried to find out exactly what products Olivia used and only found 2 things here.  Since she's a spokeswoman for Revlon, she apparently wore ALL drugstore Revlon makeup - woo hoo!! She was supposed to be wearing the super lustrous lipstick shade "pink cognito" which I wore here and here, but the color seems to vary a lot on me depending on the day - and maybe lighting!  And it doesn't look as coral as it does on her, so she must be wearing a liner that wasn't shared underneath or our natural lip colors are completely opposite.

What I loved about this look, was that everything was kept SO SIMPLE yet it made such a bold statement.  The eye shadows were almost non existent (neutral), the cheeks were light, and all the focus was on those eyes.  And that cute as pie baby bump in her elegant black and white Valentino dress was the ultimate finish.  Oh, her handsome fiancĂ© Jason Sudeikis didn't hurt either!!

What did you think about Olivia's makeup look?  Did you have an Oscar makeup favorite?
